Green Film Shooting

European Centre for Sustainability in the Media World

The German-English language magazine and online platform Green Film Shooting has been  informing creatives in Germany and abroad about eco-friendly solutions, projects, and initiatives for the film and media industry since 2013. It covers topics as diverse as environmentally friendly produced feature films for theatrical and video release; TV series and commercials; energy-efficient broadcast technology; sustainable energy concepts for cinemas; and the carbon footprint caused by digital data transfer.

Green Film Shooting presents solutions for the problem of designing an entire production and distribution chain in the film and media sector to be more eco-friendly, and it starts with project planning goes on through production and all the way to theatrical or internet release.  Energy-consuming servers in data centers, which are powered by energy from fossil fuels, are a problem just as environmentally harmful diesel generators and vehicles are.  The biggest emission factors in the life-cycle analysis of film and media productions are energy consumption and transportation use. Technologies such as LED lights and retrofit kits; electric, CNG, and fuel-cell vehicles; and hybrid systems and battery-powered solutions can help reduce carbon emissions. The building services sector has great potential. Television studios, cinemas, and event centers and locations can benefit from energy efficient concepts.

The motto Reduce, Reuse, Recycle applies to each department of a film production. Renting furniture, props, and costumes is more eco-friendly than purchasing new ones that will be discarded after use.  In set design, toxic cardboards, paint, and varnish should be avoided, while in the production office the use of recycled paper and laptops instead of desktop computers is more eco-friendly.  Best Practices are also available for catering. The recommendations include regional food products and the avoidance of plastic bottles and single-use dishes and eating utensils.  Simple tips for waste prevention, carpooling, as well as just shutting down lights and electronic devices after work can cut costs and save precious resources.

For its pioneering work in introducing eco-friendly working practices to the film and media industry, Green Film Shooting was awarded as „Project Sustainability 2019“ by the Council of Sustainability (RNE) and the Regional Network of Sustainability Strategies (RENN), and also received the Transformation Prize in the top category.Green Film Shooting was certified as a Hamburg EcoProfit company in 2019 and is member of the Environment Partnership Hamburg.

In addition to its print magazine and the website, Green Film Shooting regularly hosts events in Germany and abroad. These include panel discussions, workshops, conferences, lectures at universities and film schools, as well as a TEDx Talk.
